Kai nu’u o Kanaloa

This artistic undertaking resulted in a wave soundscape kinetic installation deeply rooted in the power and spiritual essence of ocean waves, which, over millennia, have shaped the Hawaii we know and love. The dynamic installation is cleverly powered by real-time data sourced from ocean buoys situated across the islands. This data drives the motion of 48 individual rainsticks, ingeniously recreating the graceful movements and soothing sounds of Hawaii’s ocean waves amidst the urban landscape of downtown Honolulu.

Named Kai nu’u o Kanaloa or simply Kai this art installation speaks volumes about its connection with the sea. The name resonates with the story of the Rising Tide of Kanaloa. Kai is Hawaiian for ocean, nu’u is suggestive of a peak or summit, while Kanaloa pays homage to one of the four preeminent gods of Hawaiian mythology, often revered as the deity of the sea, tides, and ocean navigation.

Kai’s modern rainsticks come equipped with an inner acoustic membrane, over which 600 steel balls roll in accordance with the data collected. These movements mirror the height, direction, and rhythm of the ocean’s waves. Additionally, the installation features lights connected to a motor sensor that synchronizes with the motion of the steel balls, thus generating an enchanting light wave display. This not only provides a visual spectacle but also further deepens the connection between the artwork and the ever-changing dynamics of the ocean.
